Calin Daian: statement

In all my past studies, I employed the idea that architectural space uses form and shape to stimulate emotional feelings. I studied this topic, initially with the optical illusion that the Greeks used in temples, during the Hellenistic period. Continuing with the same theme, I then looked at the Baroque conception of space to generate tromp-l'oeil techniques. In my latest works, I started by using the ideas of early OPArt. Then I continued with 3-D picture techniques and holography. Through these works, I have recognised that modern art can change people's perception of space more than other types of art.

In my future work, I shall mainly be using existing architectural space. I shall use and develop such spaces to show that materiality can affect form. Soon, I shall design some pieces of artwork in such a way that they will almost form part of the wall. Then, I shall take photographs of the artwork, using different light settings. Afterwards, I shall employ these images in another architectural space (using floor, wall and ceiling etc). Next, I shall note down my reaction (from the artist's point of view) and that of the others. Finally, I shall exhibit all the details, which may include sketches, artwork, wall structure etc) of every stage of development, as one massive piece of artwork.

The work on view consists of 3-dimensional forms attached to the wall. This continues into the space of the whole foyer, to give the impression of infinite space. I have chosen a perspective point of view from the main entrance, which gives the impression that the materiality of the wall does not exist. The theme of the drawings on the main wall is also used on related structures i.e. the floor and ceiling.
